Dental Crowns

Dental Crowns are tooth-shaped caps attached over your existing tooth. This is done to either cover up the tooth and hide its deformities like cracks or discoloration. Or it may be done to protect the tooth from damage if it has undergone a root canal and is left in a weakened state. Stainless steel tooth crowns are generally used temporarily for baby teeth. Metal tooth crowns are generally used for the molars because they’re strong and durable. And composite resin or porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns are generally used for the visible front teeth because they’re strong and they look like actual teeth.

Dental Bridges

Dental Bridges are used to replace a series of missing teeth, for example, if you lose three or more teeth in a single series. A dental bridge is made of the fake teeth known as “pontics” buttressed on either side by dental crowns or dental implants known as “abutments”. Traditional and cantilever dental bridges are those in which the pontics are supported by a single or double dental crown on either side. And dental implant bridges are those that are supported by implants on either side.

Tooth Colored Fillings

Tooth colored fillings are used to cover up the gaps left by cavities or dental fractures. This is necessary because if the cavities grow, the bacterial infection may spread to the pulp chamber of the tooth and you may need a root canal or eventual dental extraction. Tooth colored fillings are made of materials like porcelain or composite resin, i.e., tooth-colored materials. Porcelain fillings are the best because they have the same structure as enamel and also reflect light similarly.

Root Canals

Root canals are chambers within the tooth that hold the pulp chamber, blood vessels, and nerves. When the bacterial infection spreads to the root canal, the dentist has no option but to drill into the tooth and remove all of the infected pulp and nerves. Following that, the dentist seals the tooth and places a dental crown over it for protection. This entire procedure is known as a root canal and it’s often the only way to save the tooth from complete decay.

Dentures & Partials

Dentures are dental appliances made of fake porcelain or acrylic teeth supported on a gum-colored acrylic base. Full dentures are attached to your gums if you’ve lost all of your teeth. Partials are used to replace some of the missing teeth and partial dentures are supported by the remaining actual teeth.

Gum Disease

Gum disease occurs because of bacterial infection caused by a combination of bad diet, poor oral hygiene, and refusal to go for dental cleaning sessions. The plaque and tartar accumulation in your teeth leads to bacterial infection, which eventually leads to gum disease. If you’re suffering from gum disease, the dentist will remove all of the accumulated plaque and tartar and smoothen your root’s surface to reattach your gums to your teeth.

Bone Grafting

Bone grafting is a procedure in which the dentist plants bone grafting material derived from various sources into the jawbone of your missing tooth. This is done to either preserve the bone structure during tooth extraction or to facilitate bone regeneration after tooth extraction. Most people get bone grafting done if they don’t have enough bone structure to get dental implants.

Restorative Dentistry Q&A

Is an implant better than a fixed bridge?

Dental implants are widely hailed as the best replacements for missing teeth. These are metallic frameworks screwed into the jawbone of a missing tooth so they serve as a foundation for your teeth.

You don’t have to get dental implants instead of a fixed bridge — you can get them both. The dental implant can serve as a replacement for the tooth’s root and the fixed bridge can be fastened over the dental implant to replace the crown.

Together, a dental implant and dental bridge can perfectly replace the original appearance and functionality of your teeth.

Are dental implants a permanent solution for tooth loss?

Dental implants are a permanent solution for tooth loss because the metallic frameworks can last a lifetime and they firmly fasten the crown in place.

What are the types of teeth implants?

The following is a brief overview of the different types of teeth implants:

  • Endosteal implants — screw-shaped placeholder posts implanted in a healthy jawbone.
  • Subperiosteal Implants — metallic framework that lies under the gum tissues but over the jawbone.
  • Zygomatic implants — metallic frameworks that are supported in your cheekbone rather than jawbone if you don’t have sufficient bone structure. This procedure is rarely used because it isn’t as effective and dentists recommend getting a bone graft to facilitate jawbone regeneration.

Are dental implants a better option than dentures?

Dental implants are more aesthetic and convenient than traditional dentures because they’re firmly fixed in your jawbone permanently, thus becoming a part of your body. Dentures, in comparison, are removable and they often come off while speaking or eating.

However, you can also get implant-supported dentures in which the dentures are fastened to strategically-positioned implants so they don’t come off — in that case, both dentures and dental implants work together to replace all of your teeth.
