General Dentistry

General dentistry includes a wide range of basic — often preventative — dental treatments. Most general dentistry services relate to monitoring oral health and preventing dental diseases from occurring in the first place. They generally include dental checkups, x-rays, and other screening tests as well. Most general dentistry services are usually covered by dental insurance plans.

At Yorktown Dental Spa, we provide a wide range of general dentistry services like Preventative Dentistry, Teeth Cleaning, Oral Cancer Screening, TMD/TMJ, Scaling & Root Planing, Pediatric Dentistry, and Bruxism/ Teeth Grinding. Please continue reading for a brief discussion of each of these aspects of general dentistry.

Preventative Dentistry

Preventative Dentistry refers to services that help you maintain optimal oral health and prevent dental diseases from occurring. Preventative dentistry generally involves procedures like dental deep cleaning, oral exams, and digital x-ray examination. Dental deep cleaning is a procedure in which the dentist uses special tools to remove all of the accumulated plaque and tartar from your teeth and below your gumline. Digital x-rays are modern x-rays that use electronic sensors with 90% less radiation than traditional x-rays and they help the dentist visualize your oral cavity to determine if there are any anomalies.

Teeth Cleaning

Teeth Cleaning, also referred to as dental deep cleaning, is a procedure in which the dentist removes all of the plaque and tartar accumulated in your teeth and gums. No matter how well you brush your teeth, some stray food particles left between your teeth can eventually turn into plaque and tartar, which leads to bacterial infection. Teeth cleaning prevents bacteria from building up and thus prevents gum disease. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), you must go for professional teeth cleaning and dental exam at least once every six months.

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer screening refers to a series of visual, physical, or screening tests used to determine if you have any signs of oral cancer or even precancerous lesions that can lead to cancer. It helps identify signs of oral cancer at an early stage so they can be treated before they become serious. The dentist looks for signs and symptoms like red and white patches, lesions, non-healing wounds in your oral cavity, and other such signs. They also use screening tests like a special light that makes the abnormal cells appear white or a special dye that stains the abnormal cells blue, thus helping with identification.

TMD/TMJ is a condition in which your temporomandibular joints located on either side of the head in front of your ears malfunction. These joints are responsible for all of the facial movements including speaking and eating, so TMD can be extremely painful. It can lead to earaches, facial pain, stiffness, soreness, dizziness, and various other symptoms. While diagnosing and treating TMD, the dentist has to identify the root cause of TMD, which may be bruxism, jaw injuries, arthritis, or even connective tissue diseases. Once they’ve identified the root cause of TMD, they proceed to curate the appropriate treatment plan.

Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling & Root Planing are types of teeth cleaning generally used when you have gingivitis or periodontitis. Scaling is a procedure in which the dentist uses a scaler to remove the accumulated plaque and tartar from your teeth and from below the gumline. Root Planing is only necessary if you have periodontitis and there’s a wide pocket of space between your gums and teeth. The dentist smoothens the root’s surface so your gums can naturally heal around your teeth and tighten again.

Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric dentistry refers to dental services meant specifically for children. A pediatric dentist, or pedodontist, is someone who has specialized training in dealing with children and teenager’s dental issues. This is necessary because children go through dental issues that are unique from those of adults.

Bruxism/ Teeth Grinding

Bruxism/ Teeth Grinding is a condition in which you subconsciously keep clenching and gnashing your teeth either during the day, or at night, or both. It can happen because of certain secondary diseases, medications, physiological factors, or even psychological factors like stress and anxiety. The dentist identifies the root cause of bruxism and treats it appropriately. We also provide mouthguards for grinding to protect you from the adverse effects of teeth grinding such as chipped and fractured teeth, worn out enamel, etc.
